Abstract The ammonium retained on the zeolite exchange sites may be eluted by either sodium or other cations in a regenerant solution. An experimental study has been conducted to find the ammonium ion exchange characteristics of the natural zeolite after chemical regeneration. As the Na^+ concentration of the regenerant was increased, the elution rate of ammonium ion was significantly increased. After repeated regeneration, the ion exchange capacity was increased, and the intraparticle diffusion coefficient gradually increased because the activation of exchange sites by Na^+ and removal of impurities during drying. Both the capacity and the rate of ammonium ion exchange showed remarkable improvement after the first regeneration. However, the improvement became smaller as the number of regeneration increased.
