Abstract In August, 1995, the water quality of offshore waters around the Korean East coast was evaluated by bioassay using gametes, embryoss and early development systems of a sea urchins species Scaphechinus brevis. The results showed that despite the inflows of several river systems, the East coast maintained the 2nd grade(II) quality. Site 2 in Cheungcho Lake of Sokcho were rated as 3rd grade(III). Site 1, 3 Sokcho shore, site 4, 5 Kanglung offshore, site 13 Wooljin offshore were all rated the lst grade(I). The other nine sites proved to be 2nd grade.
