Abstract The impacts of background dissolved organic matter (BOM) on the sorption of three phenolics (phenol, o-nitrophenol (ONP), and 2, 4-dinitrophenol (DNP)) were investigated with isotherm experiments. To investigate the effect of BOM, three different amounts of BOM per unit weight of GAC were preloaded. All the experiments were conducted in an artificial groundwater. Preloaded GAC shows decreased sorption capacity for phenol undue both oxic and anoxic conditions, increased for ONP at pH 4 in a certain range of equilibrium concentration, and increased for DNP at pH 4 under both oxic and anoxic conditions and at pH 7.5 under anoxic conditions. Sorption of these compounds with preloaded GAC was affected by the presence of dissolved oxygen and solution pH. The most plausible explanation for the changed sorption capacities of the GAC for ONP and DNP under certain conditions is that there were some chemical reactions other than oxidative coupling on GAC surfaces.
