Abstract The bactericidal effects and by-products of chlorine by ammonia were studied. The bactericidal efficiency was perfect only after chlorine was added until the breakpoint. The concentration of residual chlorine increased from initial time to addition of chlorine 6㎎/L and decreased to addition of chlorine 11㎎/L, and then again increased after the breakpoints. Ammonia existence in raw water could reduce amount of the by-products of chlorine such as THMs, halo acetic acids, chloral hydrate and chloroacetonitrile but the concentration of nitrate was increased. At the condition bactericidal efficiency was slightly decreased.
