Abstract |
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) are known to be hazardous compounds with life threatening effects as some of them are proven to be environmentally obnoxious carcinogenic compounds. The known conventional methods of metabolic degradation by microorganism and of chemical oxidation by chlorination or ozonation have generated disappointing results for the effective degradation of PAHs. The ultrasound irradiation were investigated as a method of attacking the chemical structure of PAH compounds for a complete breakdown. This method could produce very promising results due to formation of hydroxyl radical (OH·), which is known as a less selective oxidant, and very reactive with carbon-chlorine bonds and carbon-carbon double bonds making them capable of generating aromatic ring cleavage. In ultrasound irradiation, it is technically feasible that more degradation efficiency can be achieved by several methods, such as addition of appropriate agents like H₂O₂ and some gases, and pH controlling to produce more free radicals. |
