Abstract This research was carried out to investigate the applicability of a nonwoven fabric filter in a bioreactor for treatment 01 sewage. The performance of a nonwoven fabric filter bioreactor(NFBR) was compared with that of a conventional activated sludge process(ASR). The results of the experiment showed that the BOD removal efficiencies of the two processes were always above 95.0%. The SS removal efficiency of the NFBR was always better than that of the ASR. Although the nitrification efficiency of the NFBR was low at the initial stage of the experiment, it progressively approached to almost 100%. In the ASR. however, the nitrification efficiency deteriorated to 10.2% at the HRT of 4hr after a value of 98.7% at other HRTs. The T-N removal efficiency of the NFBR with a range of 35.6-43.5% was better than that of the ASR with a range 01 17.4-33.6% due to denitrification in the biofilm formed on and inside the fabric filter. The flow flux through the nonwoven fabric filter increased from 0.1 ㎥/㎡-day up to 0.29 ㎥/㎡-day as the HRT decreased from 12hrs to 4hrs. It is concluded that a nonwoven fabric filter can be utilized in a bioreactor for treatment of sewage by replacing the settling tank in the activated sludge process.
