Abstract This paper aims to investigate the present thermal environment and occupants’ evaluation of intelligent office building and to find out the problems of the existing intelligent HVAC system. This result will contribute to suggest the improvement of intelligent HVAC system. This study measured the thermal environment and conducted interview with the management staff and survey for occupants of K intelligent office building with variable air volume system in Seoul. The surveys and measurements took place in the fifth floor of K intelligent office building for 27 hours in May, 2004. The results were summarized as follows; the thermal environment was fine generally except low relative humidity, and occupants also showed high dryness sensation. Furthermore, the mean indoor air temperatures are different according to the rooms by the maximum of 3.7oC, because the rooms divided by partitions are not same as the units of HVAC system. Therefore, HVAC system’s flexibility which can correspond to various renovations like an alternation of office layout, etc must be needed. Moreover, due to the absence of communication between the management staff and occupants, devices for HVAC system's flexibility which was already in existence could not function properly, so education to occupants about the method of HVAC system and communication passage will be needed.
