Abstract According to the growing population and increased the use of machinery, indoor noise which is invisible pollution, is threatening human health. Indoor noise can be absorbed, deflect, refract, and reflect sounds. In addition, the vibration of a sound wave is absorbed by leaves, branches and soil. Therefore, by understanding the properties of indoor sound environment in accordance with the availability of indoor plants, a basic study on the indoor noise reduction effect of plantation in an indoor space was conducted. In this study, experiments were conducted by grouping into the space with no plantation, the space where 3% of total room volume was planted with Spathypyllum, and the space where 3% of total room volume was deployed with paper-based structures. High frequency non-directional sound source (Supper Tweeter Source) was set up in an indoor space (5.0 m×5.0 m×2.5 m) to measure indoor noise. We could know that 1) in terms of reverberation time under different frequency range, reverberation time significantly decreased under 1 KHz, 2 KHz and 4 KHz frequency range on the plantation status. And 2) Each arrangement type had substantial effect on reducing reverberation time and on increasing acoustic absorptivity in low frequency range. 3) Among arrangements types, equipartition type of plantation was most effective in reducing reverberation time. 4) Sound absorption effect of the plantation status was better and in particular, it was much more effective in a low frequency band. In overall, it showed that it is effective in reducing the noise stress of people in a room.
