Abstract The purpose of this study was to compare functional fitness (FT) status of elderly between Korean andJapanese. The subjects were 1228 (390 Koreans and 838 Japanese) elderly man and women, aged 60 to 80 over years.Six performance test items related to FT were measured in Japan and Korea by using same instruments. The datawere analyzed by two way ANOVA. Korean and Japan male were not significantly different in balance. Korean andJapan female were not significantly different in flexibility. But Koreans had significantly lower scores in almost FTthan Japanese, although the magnitude of this difference depended on the items. Form the above results, it can beconcluded (1) that advancing age significantly affects performance for almost all items in older people of both countries, and (2) that the higher functional fitness levels reflects a lifestyle of more engagement in exercise or physical activitywith longer duration and higher frequency in Japanese.
