Abstract Interior materials of apartment housing are composed of complex chemical compounds which dischargeformaldehyde (HCHO) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). And they cause sick house syndrome in apartmenthousing. With the indoor air quality (IAQ) management act, the standard test method for IAQ was proposed by ministryof environment in korea. The improved interior materials have been developed as the efforts to improve IAQ. buildingdesigners and constructors needs the data of emission characteristics for choosing the off-gassing interior materials. This study evaluated the emission rates from interior materials (the wall papers, the floor panels and the adhesives forthe floor panels) with the small chamber method. The formaldehyde (HCHO), total volatile organic compounds(TVOCs) were analyzed and in addition, 5 main volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including benzene, toluene, ethyl-benzene, xylene and styrene which are the items for the report to announce to the apartment occupants in prior to themoving in.
