Abstract Due to a change in residential environment, apartment houses have become a main housing style, and thenumber of fire outbreaks and the resultant damage are increasing each year. The fire in the apartment is not restrictedto the level of the origin, spreading to the upper levels, and resulting in greater damage. Since installing a balconycan significantly reduce the spread of fire, fire spread to the upper levels was confirmed, comparing the cases withand without balcony extension, through site experiment and full scale model experiment in this paper. It was confirmedthat the fire can spread not only to the next higher level but also to two levels higher due to the outburst of flamewhich reached a significant temperature in the case without balcony, while the possibility of fire spread to the upperlevel reduced considerably with the balcony. As above, it was confirmed that balcony not only functioned as a bufferspace, which connects the inside and outside of a building, but also provided a significnat function to prevent the firespread to the upper levels.
