Abstract It is important to increase the sound proof performance of building for reducing the influence of aircraftnoise on the basis of actual survey of existed buildings. The purpose of this study is to propose the basic data fordesigning sound insulation of residential house. In this study, field measurement of aircraft noise and indoor and outdoornoise level difference were carried out for 7 days in 6 rural residential houses. Subjective responses to aircraft noisewere examined by 296 questionnaires in that area as well. As the result, aircraft noise levels showed to be Leq59.1~74.2dB(A), WECPNL 71 over, and indoor noise levels were NC-35~53 over acceptable NC-30 in 6 measuredhouses. Percentage of answers was respectively very high in loudness and noisiness, and annoyance of aircraft noise.Consequently, it is thought that the residents should be usually influenced on their life by aircraft noise in examinedarea. Noise reduction effect showed to be 13.6~30.5dB(A) in measured houses, and houses with double window werepreferable to those with single window in sound proof performance. Comprehensive architectural technological exam-ination should be needed as the air-tight window and the double wall, etc.
