Abstract This work aims to propose a practical system of evaluating discomfort glare from daylight. The degree ofdiscomfort glare was examined using the luminous body of nonuniform surface luminance. It is found that the degreeof discomfort glare is decreased when the ratio of lower luminance to higher luminance is decreased. The degree ofdiscomfort glare was estimated for each experimental condition, and compared to the observations. The estimation wasmade using two methods: one used the average luminance of the whole luminous body in the evaluation formula, andthe other summed the glare sensation for each section. No significant differences among the observations and the twokinds of estimates were found. Consequently, the use of the average luminance was proposed for evaluation of dis-comfort glare from nonuniform large glare sources as a simple and practical method.
