Abstract Due to the internalization and the globalization, the current population of foreign residents in Seoul Korea amounts to 170,000 which constitutes 1.7% of the total population of Seoul. In this paper, we study the situations of resident Japanese in Seoul, and analyze their dwelling characteristics, degree of satisfaction and residential demands. We observed some conflicts and demands in housing spaces or behavioral patterns of respondents. Observations are as follows. In terms of Ondol, they have preference and continue to use it while staying in Seoul as their main heating system. But they restricted it to use on the heating of living room and bedrooms only. In terms of the vacant space in the middle of living room or in the dining area of kitchen, though they do not have the good feeling about the layouts, they still like to use the space because it provides their families to get close together. In terms of Tadami, they do not use or want it any more in Korea, which is replaced by Ondol. In terms of toilets and bathrooms, they have the tendency to use them separatedly in the same patterns as in Japan. These observations provide good foundation for comparative analysis in the dwelling characteristics and behavioral patterns of Japanese in Korea and Japan, or of Japanese in Korea and Koreans in Korea. It may also provide valuable insights in housing plans for residential Japanese in Korea.
