Title Depression, Cognitive Impairment Levels and Classification of LOC of the Community-dwelling Elderly with Arthritis

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the depression, cognitive impairment levels and classification of LOC(Level of Care) of the community-dwelling elderly with arthritis. The subjects of this study were 88 elderly who were receiving home care services from community welfare center in Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea. The instruments used for the study were CPS(Cognition Performance Scale), DRS(Depression Rating scale) and MI-CHOICE from the MDS-HC(Minimum Data Set-Home Care) 2.0 Version. Of the elderly sample, the LOC shown as that ‘Nusing home’ 0%, ‘Home care’ 9.1%, ‘Intermittent Personal Care’ 55.7%, ‘Home Maker’ 8.0% and ‘Information and Referal’ 27.3% among the elderly. Depression was evident in 77.3% of the elderly subjects. The depression and cognition impairment levels were significantly higher in ‘Home care’ and ‘Intermittent Personal Care’ groups than the others groups, respectively. There was a significant positive correlation between depression level and cognition impairment level. As a result, it is necessary to development of education program to the elderly with arthritis including depression and cognition management care.
