Abstract The objective of this study is to propose the exponent of background luminance in the evaluation formula of discomfort glare from interior lighting. In the experiment, the degree of discomfort glare from luminous body was measured in three different conditions of background luminance. From the results of the experiments, it is known that the exponent of background luminance varies according to the luminance of the glare source. The size of the glare source has little effect on the variation of the exponent of background luminance. Based on the results of the experiment, a formula to obtain the exponent of background luminance was proposed considering the luminance of glare source. The validation of the proposed exponent of background luminance was conducted using the experimental conditions and the evaluation values. Through the validation, it is confirmed that the proposed exponent of background luminance can be adopted in the evaluation formula of discomfort glare when the size of glare source is 0.12 from to 0.68 sr.
