Title Effects of Lumbar Stabilization Exercise on Lordosis Angle and Muscular Strength in Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion Surgery Patients

Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the posterior lumbar spine stabilization exercise on lordosis angle and muscle strength after posterior lumbar interbody fusion surgery and to provide a relevant clinical information. Twenty men who had posterior lumbar interbody fusion surgery were randomly assigned to either group: exercise group (N = 10, 43.7 ± 7.8 years, 172.8 ± 3.2 cm, 73.1 ± 5.9 kg, 24.5 ± 1.7 kg·m-2) and non-exercise group (N = 10, 42.8 ± 7.8 yrs, 172.2 ± 4.3 cm, 71.1 ± 5.2 kg, 24.0 ± 1.5 kg·m-2). A 8-week lumbar stabilization exercise program consisted of three phases; warm-up, main exercise (isometric and isotonic), and cool-down, was applied to the exercise group. After the program, lordosis angle was measured by cobb's method and lumbar muscle strength was measured on each degrees (72o, 60o, 48o, 36o, 24o, 12o, 0o) by Medx. As a result, lordosis angle improvement was noticed in the exercise group compared to non-exercise group (p < .05). Lumbar muscle strength on every measured degree was higher in the exercise group than the non-exercise group (p < .05). Results suggest that more active posterior lumbar spine stabilization exercise may be necessary for the patients for their quick recovery and fast return to work.
