Abstract The goal of this study is to investigate the applications of the design elements for eco-friendly buildings in Boseong Gangol Village using the classification system of the design elements for eco-friendly buildings in existing traditional villages. The classification system of the design elements for eco-friendly buildings in existing traditional villages are composed of 5 main categories which is for land, ecological spaces within a complex, a system of residential units, the conservation of resources and energy, water resources, and the reduction of environmental contamination, and sub categories as the arrangement of complexes and 54 items of the sub categories as the adaptation to existing geographical features. The investigation of the design elements of eco-friendly buildings at Boseong Ganggol Villages performed on the basis of those categorizations showed that the sectors like the utilization of land, the spaces within a complex, the conservation of resources and energy, water resources, and the reduction of environmental contamination were generally reasonable, however, the system of residential units was deficient in the applications of some of the items of sub categories as afforestation over the walls of residential units, and the tree-planting inside residential units. In addition, 3 eco-friendly design elements unique to Ganggol Village such as private ponds within residential units besides eco-friendly design elements of Ganggol Village according to the classification system were found.
