Abstract In an attempt to offer a safe place for those children who live in an apartment complex, playgrounds have been installed almost from the beginning when the first apartment was built. The sites of the playgrounds have been chosen based on availability without making a detailed review of their daylight environment. This study is aimed at making a proposal for a practical method for predicting daylight environment and the level of brightness in a playground for children living in apartment complexes. With this end in mind, research has been made into the existing laws and regulations and literature in an attempt to choose the right methodology of evaluating the daylight environment of the playgrounds. Also it tried to verify, through case studies, whether the methodology chosen could be practically applied to the actual environment. This study suggests that along with the daylight durations, the sky ratio should be measured in order to make a comprehensive evaluation of the light environment at a playground. It is also suggested that the daylight duration be calculated by using the sun path diagram while the sky ratio be calculated by using the sky ratio diagram. The study is meaningful in that it offers a way to quantitatively evaluate the daylight environment of a playground. The method suggested in this study can be practically used when setting the standards for the daylight environment of a playground at an apartment complex or when picking a site for a playground to be installed within an apartment complex.
