Abstract |
This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of different modes of regular exercises on health related fitness in elderly women. A total of 28 female participants volunteered to participate in the study. They were randomly assigned to three different exercise groups: combined exercise group(age = 74.7 ± 8.8), resistance exercise group(age = 79.4 ± 6.4), and aerobic exercise group(age = 78.6 ± 5.8), and to one control group(age = 78.7 ± 10.2). All participants in exercise groups completed prescribed exercises three times a week for 12 weeks of intervention period. Pre- and post- tests were administered which comprised of six health related fitness tests. With occasional exceptions, all three exercise programs resulted in significant improvement in health related fitness. While any mode of regular exercise resulted in beneficiary effects in health related fitness, a combined program of aerobic and resistance exercises provides better health related benefits in elderly women. In conclusion, our data suggest that combined exercise may be useful to improve health related fitness in elderly women. |
