Abstract The purpose of this study was to analyze the covering characteristics of planted species for various greening like roof greening in urban area. Twelve plants such as Hosta longipes, Aster koraiensis,Phlox subulata etc. were selected from the perennials. Plants planted at an interval of 20 cm in the experimental planters in April, June 2011. Hedera helix and Hypericum tricolor crept over the ground irregularly. Coverage rates of Aster koraiensis, Prunella vulgaris, Ajuga reptans, Phlox subulata, Hydrangea serrata, Mazus miquelii, were over 100% at September. Among them Prunella vulgaris, Ajuga reptans, Mazus miquelii, rapidly covered in the early stage. Coverage rates of Hydrangea serrata, Aster koraiensis increased continuously in 5 months, while Artemisia laciniata, Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum decreased from September. Aster koraiensis, Hydrangea serrata, Mazus miquelii, were over 200%. With various results of this study, planting plan for urban greening in uniform should be improved for sustainable greening.
