Abstract The purpose of the current study was to investigate 1) the obesity rate by a variety of obesity measurements and 2)the prevalence of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome among overweight or obese children. Two hundred twenty eight overweight or obese children(151 males, 77 females, 4-6th grade) were recruited. The obesity rate, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome risk factors were assessed and analyzed. The obesity rate were different by obesity measurements including body mass index, waist circumference and percent body fat in this cohort. Participants in obese group were more likely to have significantly higher level of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome risk factors as compared to those in overweight group with body mass index classification. Sixty one percent participants had insulin resistance, and 15.6% had metabolic syndrome. This study concluded that the child obesity is medically severe since obesity induces metabolic syndrome risk factors and insulin resistance.
