Abstract This study aims to provide a social knowledge for pragmatic application guidelines of the interior finish materials within apartment houses, based on both the awareness of people and as it applies to the realities. For this purpose, a series of the questionnaires survey on the actual use pattern and awareness of interior finish materials in recently-constructed and remodeled apartment houses was performed, which has extended its probe into the awareness of both occupants and practitioners. The questionnaires asked practitioners and occupants how much they desire sustainable finish materials and the difference in both parties were analyzed and compared, formulating the pragmatic solution in the determination of interior finishes. Comparative analysis of the awareness of both practitioners and occupants on environment-friendly finish materials showed that both parties were right to recognize the significance of sustainability in interior finishes. Occupants claimed to make it mandatory for builders to use sustainable finishes but practitioners believed that occupants must bear the additional expense for the selection of environment-friendly finish products.
