Abstract The number of fires was on the increase from 1995 in Korea. In particular, a fire in buildings accounted for about 66% of all fires in the last 10 years. Thus, awareness of the risk of fire in buildings is crucial and research on precautions and resolution are increased. Many researches focused on improving flame retardant performance of building materials using various nanomaterials. Among them, carbon nanomaterials were chosen for this study which has reasonable price and high flame retardant performance. There are many kinds of shapes of carbon nanomaterials such as spherical, tubular and plate forms, according to the manufacturing process. Previous research showed that flame retardant performance are affected by the shape of carbon nanomaterials. Flame retardant performances in various form and shape of carbon nanomaterials and applicability in buildings were evaluated. Also, dispersion of carbon nanomaterials were determined to find optimized form and shape, showing high flame retardant performance.
