Abstract Due to changes of perceptions of recent leisure activities, there is a need for large spaces that accommodate various sports, high-quality performances, and events. Accordingly, each local government unit is continually building a large gymnasium for multiple uses that can satisfy a voice and a music system. However, in an effort to secure such large spaces, octagonal & circular plans and high ceilings are needed, which are easily exposed to acoustic defects. On top of that, the indiscriminate use of finishing materials without consideration of acoustic performance from the design stage aggravates such defects. Accordingly, targeting large gymnasiums, after grasping acoustic defects by doing an actual survey and an analysis of physical acoustical characteristics; this study made a comparative analysis of physical acoustical performance consequences on changes in finishing materials & seating conditions, using acoustic simulation. It is thought that such a result will very useful data at times of building large gymnasiums similar to the research result in the future.
