Abstract The purpose of this study is to show the shading effect on indoor thermal environment by selecting specific trees that stands right next to the window of a school building. Thermal environment of four school buildings were evaluated by the types of trees: shrub and high trees and, broad-leaved and needle-leaved trees. The intensity of illumination, temperature, and relative humidity were measured and the results showed that a clear distinction was appeared by different types of trees. The presence of broad-leaved trees brought good thermal environment and enhanced indoor thermal comfort.
