Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to examine the association between Walking activity per week, metabolic syndrome (MS) risk factors, and prevalence of MS in Korean adult population. This study was to evaluate the crosssectional associations between Walking activity per week, MS risk factors, and prevalence of MS in Korean adult population. We analyzed data from The Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey V-3 in 2012. Walking activity per week were assessed using a walking frequency questionnaire. Metabolic syndrome was ascertained using criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel-III (NCEP-APT III). In 5,228 subjects, 1,156 subjects were defined as having metabolic syndrome. When subjects were divided into three groups (0-2 days, 3-5 days, and 6-7 days per week) according to walking activity per week. Subjects with 0-2 days per week group (Reference Odds ratio (OR): 1) had 30 percent higher risks for prevalence of metabolic syndrome compared to those with 6-7 days per week group (OR: 0.7, 95% CI: 0.58-0.84) after adjustment for age, body mass index and smoking. In conclusion, walking activity is an important role in reducing the increased risks of metabolic syndrome. |
