Abstract The purpose of this study is to analyze the awareness of dwellers of traditional hanok houses and modern apartment complexes to understand their perception of lives and lifestyles in Korea. We drafted a questionnaire to identify awareness of residential and sound environments, which was distributed to the residents of hanok and apartment housing in Jeonbuk Jeonju and Jeonnam Damyang-gun. Unlike apartment housing, which has a high degree of convenience, hanok housing had a high degree of satisfaction with stability and intimacy. Apartment housing is a simple sound environment, whereas hanok housing is perceived as a tranquil and pleasant sound environment with a high sound environment satisfaction. While the sound environment of apartment housing is exposed to internal and external noises such as inter-floor noises or car-related noises, hanok housing has the characteristics of a quiet hanok village or a tourist attraction with noises such as tourists/people talking and birds. According to the types and uses of traditional and modern buildings, we were able to confirm that there is a difference in the lives and lifestyles of people today.
