Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to develop natural ventilation devices that can reduce traffic noise in open conditions by the installation on the building envelope of high-rise apartments. Two naturally ventilated prototypes, plenum and louver types, were manufactured after reviewing previous works. The dimension of the devices has 837(W)×300(H)×85(D) mm which is determined by considering the size of window flame and indoor visibility. Various design variables focused on material properties in the cavity were selected by including opening conditions, amount of acoustic absorber, and application of micro-perforated panel. The experiment was carried out by following the relevant standard in a sound insulation laboratory. Within the considered design variables, the result shows that, in the open condition, the maximum sound insulation in the weighted sound reduction index corrected for road traffic noise, RW+Ctr, showed 19 dB and 12 dB for the plenum and louver devices, respectively. In the closed condition, the maximum RW+Ctr of 23 dB and 14 dB were shown for the plenum and louver devices, respectively. Under natural ventilation conditions, the RW+Ctr was improved by 4 dB for the plenum and 2 dB for the louver after installing the absorber and perforated panel in the cavity. |
