Abstract The purpose of study was to address the relationship between the characteristics of local residents and their cognitive neighborhood territory. On-site survey was conducted to investigate how residents in Onyang district, A-san in South Korea, perceive their neighborhood territory in shape and area depending on their individual characteristics and satisfaction of neighborhood environment. Residents were asked to answer general questions including age, gender, driving status, length of residency and their satisfaction degree of neighborhood environment, in addition to draw cognition maps of neighborhood territory. Cognition map types were classified in four shapes; round, urban street, protruded, and scattered. The study revealed different tendency of the responses in cognitive map types depending on gender, age, and driving status and that the cognitive area was influenced by the satisfaction degree of neighborhood environment. This study will contribute to future researches on redefining ‘neighborhood’ by providing basic information of social and physical characteristics of urban dwellers.
