Abstract The application of PCM to the wall of a building has been proven to be effective in improving energy efficiency, but studies on whether the application of PCM to a building is effective in terms of thermal comfort is insignificant. In this study, a building energy simulation analysis was conducted assuming that the packing type PCM was applied to the wall of the building. In this study, n-hexadecane, n-heptadecane, n-octadecane, and n-eicosane were used as PCM. As variables for simulation, there is a difference in the phase change temperature and specific heat of PCM. For the weather data, four locations reflecting various climates in Korea were selected. As a result of the simulation, 2.5~7.93% of heating energy was reduced and 8.51~11.35% of cooling energy was reduced in the four regions. In addition, n-hexadecane was effective in reducing heating energy, and n-octadecane was effective in reducing cooling energy. According to the thickness of PCM, the maximum reduction in heating energy in Chuncheon was 162.71kW, and the maximum reduction in cooling energy in Jeju was 21.38kW. In addition, the PCM applied model had a longer comfortable period than the reference model. However, the difference between the PCM application models was not significant due to the maintenance of the indoor temperature due to the operation of the facility system in the building.
