Abstract |
In this study, an analysis of the tensile strength and size effect of concrete was carried out using meso-scale finite element method. Prior to the analysis, a method of defining concrete as a meso-scale composite with multi-phase was described. The concrete was assumed to be a composite with three phases of aggregates, cement matrix, and ITZ, and the material properties of each phase were applied. The split and direct tensile failure behaviors of concrete were analyzed using the constructed analytical model, and the size effect was confirmed through this analysis. In addition, the performance of the analytical model was evaluated by comparing the experimental results with the analytical results. It is confirmed that the application of the meso-scale size analysis model is effective to study the occurrence and progress of tensile cracks.
