Abstract Pilotis type buildings in Korea are usually composed of lower frames and upper shear wall structures. Pilotis buildings have been seriously damaged during earthquakes because of the formation of soft and weak stories. The KBC2016 code requires special seismic load to apply to pilotis buildings, and the strength ratio is limited for vertical discontinuity. However, the code does not consider the seismic performance of pilotis according to ground type, stiffness, and strength ratio. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the response characteristics of a 1span, 5story RC pilotis type building according to ground type, stiffness, and strength ratio, in order to identify the effects of variables for ensuring elastic behavior of pilotis type building. Analytical models consist of 1span 5story RC pilotis partial structure by ground type. For the analytical models, nonlinear dynamic analysis is performed with parameters of ground type, stiffness, and strength ratios. The maximum response of artificial seismic waves, El-Centro NS(1940) and Taft EW(1952) is used to examine the behavior and the ductility ratio. The results of the study showed that 1) There was a difference in ductility ratio depending on ground type. 2) Lateral displacement response decreased with increasing strength and stiffness ratios. 3) Ductility ratio decreased with increasing strength ratio and increased with increasing stiffness ratio. 4) Strength ratio for elastic behavior differs by ground type.
