Abstract |
A large amount of sargassum honeri came to the southern coast of Korean peninsula and the coast of Jeju island, causing serious damage to the fisheries and aquaculture farms. One of the solution of this problem is to employ the sargassum honeri as a raw material for concrete production instead of synthetic polymers. Synthetic polymers have been widely used in the concrete-based materials, especially for the repair of bridge deck pavement. In this study, a series of tests was carried out to investigate concrete properties affected by replacing the synthetic polymer with the biopolymer made from sargassum honeri. In the slump test, the slump decreased with increasing the biopolymer content, however, the workability was improved by mixing with lithium carbonate, increasing the slump to 10~15 mm. Compressive strength and flexural strength tests showed the strength reduction with increasing the biopolymer content, however, strength requirements were satisfied by employing lithium carbonate. Compressive strength and flexural strength were measured to be more than 21 MPa and 4.5 MPa at the age of 4 hours, respectively. The bond strength tests showed that the strength requirement of 1.4 MPa was satisfied by the incorporation of the hardening accelerator.
