Abstract This study investigated the effect of airborne chlorides on surface and penetrated chlorides in Gochang on the West Coast of Korea. Concrete specimens with various water-cement ratio were manufactured and exposed at 10~5,000 m distance from the seashore for 5 years. Airborne chlorides were also measured at the same location. The specimens were analyzed to measure surface and penetrated chlorides according to the depth of concrete up to 50 mm. The results showed that the surface and penetrated chlorides were proportional to the airborne chlorides raised to a power, and the surface chlorides had a linear relationship to the penetrated chlorides under the stable penetration condition. It means that the penetration properties of airborne chlorides would be estimated through these relationship curves, and thus, a proactive maintenance and management strategy could be established with the penetration prediction against the salt attack from airborne chlorides under marine environment.
