Title Effect of Placement Direction of Concrete on Compressive Strength and Size Effect of Specimens Using MSFEM

Abstract Numerical study on the effect of concrete placement direction and loading direction on compressive strength and size effect of specimens was carried out using MSFEM (meso-scale finite element method). Prior to the main analysis, the method of defining concrete as a meso-scale composite and multi-phase was described. The concrete was assumed to be a composite material having three phases of aggregates, cement matrix, and ITZ, and the material properties of each phase were applied. The uni-axial compressive failure behavior of concrete was analyzed by the constructed numerical model, and the compressive strength and size effect were confirmed through this analysis. In addition, the performance of the numerical model was evaluated by comparing the experimental results with the numerical results. Finally, the correlation between compressive strengths with size, shape, and placement direction of specimens were investigated.
