Abstract In this study, the performance of modified sulfur cement mortar was examined in order to assess its suitability as a repair material. A series of tests confirmed that the incorporation of modified sulfur increased the compressive, flexural, and bond strength of cement mortar. The mechanical performance of the modified sulfur mortar met the requirements for polymer cement mortar which is representatively used as repair material. As a result of microstructure image analysis, the average porosity and unhydrated ratio of the modified sulfur cement mortar were lower than that of the typical cement mortar and polymer cement mortar. Therefore, it is anticipated that mortar with an appropriate amount of modified sulfur can be used as a repair material instead of polymer mortar.
