Abstract When designing high-rise precast (PC) structures, seismic safety must be guaranteed. A fundamental seismic design principle for PC structures is to emulate the capacity of cast-in-place concrete structures. The emulation of PC structures can be evaluated using either a relative or absolute standard. In this study, the structural behavior of eight reinforced concrete (RC) and PC specimens were compared. The strength, stiffness, and energy dissipation of the PC specimens were compared with the structural behavior of the RC specimens based on both relative and absolute emulation criteria. The results showed that there was no significant difference between the relative and absolute emulation criteria for specimen strength. However, for the energy dissipation rate, four intermediate moment frame specimens did not meet the absolute equivalence criteria. In addition, the absolute rigidity ratio was highly variable, and there were differences depending on the member cross section.
