Abstract The ‘Hanseongbu’played an important role as the capital of the Joseon Dynasty since 14th century and this territory has been the central part of Seoul till now. ‘Hanseongbu’was made on the basis of autocratic royal authority and its structure was formed to represent the former cosmic urban form which symbolizes the propriety of the dynasty. But this cosmic form began to change with reformation of the social structure in 17th century and the transition of royal palaces and public offices promoted the change of the ‘Hanseongbu’s urban structure.
These changes meant the transition from former symbolic urban structure to latter functional structure.
These aspects provide the first step in analysing the structure of Korean cities.
