Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive discussion of the genealogical table of urban housing in Italy. This study uses the typo-morphological method in analysing the urban spatial structure of the Italian cities. Italy is a country which has a long historical development of urban housing, and has various accumulated historical traces of housing. Italian urban housings have changed morphologically from ancient time to pre-modern period, influencing those of other countries at each era. Therefore, although this study deals with an aspect of historical change of Italian urban housing, it is to comprehend dwelling culture of Western world. As a typo-morphological depiction of urban spatial structure, this study is based on the assumption that the evolving form of urban structure and housing types cannot be separated and should be understood with reference to the larger context of political, economic, and social life. Based on this assumption, the results of this study are threefold: Firstly, the typological base of Italian urban housing is Roman Domus. And secondly, two types of housing generated through Domus in the middle ages: the casa a corte and the casa a schiera. And thirdly, transformation of urban housing of Italy has ended by appearance of the casa in linea which is typologically similar to modern apartment. |
