Abstract This article studies on the builder’s thoughts of Do-San-Seo-Dang(陶山書堂) by Toegye(退溪), Yi Hwang(李滉). When Toegye, Yi Hwang was 31 (26th in King Joong-Jong, 1531), he began constructing several buildings, at first built Ji-San-Wa-Sa(芝山蝸舍) and then Yang-Jin-Am(養眞庵), Han-Seo-Am(寒棲庵), Gye-Sang-Seo-Dang(溪上書堂) one by one. He searched for the location of Do-San-Seo-Dang confronting Rak-Cheon(洛川) in the south of Do-San mountain in 1557 to complete construction of Do-San-Seo-Dang in November 1560. This article tries to explore the process of building Do-San-Seo-Dang and to induce the builder’s basic thoughts.
This study aims at deducing the builder’s basic thoughts from analyzing the poems of Toegye, paintings of Dosan-Seo-Dang Toegye Yi Hwang and some lines of Joong-Yuong(中庸) and from studying the buildings of Toegye and the location of them. The study house of Toegye at first was constructed with axis of the east and west of Toegye stream(退溪川). But in 1557 Do-San-Seo-Dang was located in front of Nak river(洛江) separated from Toegye stream. This location came to guarantee the view of the north and the south with the alternation of mountain and valley in the both side to face the brilliant landscape directly. Toegye, Yi Hwang composed some poems of these elements of landscape with naming each of them to build Seo-Dang(書堂). Toegye adopted the first clause in the first chapter from Joong-Yuong to form the planning concept of those buildings. The concept of them is “天命之謂性, 率性之謂道, 修道之謂敎”-What Heaven has conferred is called The Nature: an accordance with this nature is called The Path of duty; the regulation of this path is called Instruction- in the first chapter from Joong-Yuong. This is the main subject and meaning of Joong-Yuong. So there are three spacial sequences in basic concept of building plan of Do-San-Seo-Dang, which is builder’s thought’s chapter from Joong-Yuong.
