Abstract Jong-ro in the downtown of Seoul has been used not only as an open space at many cityevents but also as a road which has a capacity of various forms of traffic since Chosun dynasty. Hereupon, this study makes a basic examination of the public space planning by understanding the extension·transition process of Jong-ro and the character of city-events in it. Also, this study examines the function of jong-no as a street space by analyze of function of Jong-no as an event space.
Jong-ro, as central axis since Chosun dynasty, has been a main traffic route and living space of citizen. Although structure of streets and location of institutions have transformed and traditional events also have declined and altered as times changed, Jong-ro has maintained the quality of urban center in its location and function. Jong-ro, which cross the city in east-west direction, has an advantage of accessibility to other space. For that reason, in order for Jongro to carry out a function of central axis, it should connect with urban open spaces such as City Hall plaza, Daehak-ro, Sejong-ro, and Jongmyo(Royal Shrine)m so that it can add synergy effect to urban events.
