Abstract This study is a comparative investigation on the spatial structure of Suzhou, China and Italian Venezia. This is a morphological depiction based on field and literature surveys. The two cities are representative canal city of Asia and Europe, those of great swathes of water, but are also comparatively well-preserved medieval cities with a dense matrix of waterway. While Suzhou is a planned city having well-organized system of street and canal, Venezia is intensely crowded with overlaid networks and labyrinth of canals. Similarities and differences in the spatial structure of those cities are reviewed through comparison of following factors:
①system of waterways and streets ②system of building lots in residential area ③layout of canal, house, and commercial buildings ④formation of community space ⑤system of housing cluster ⑥entrance system into house and circulation of inside ⑦organization of internal space in house ⑧additive spaces around house. While spatial organization of private house of both cities is similar having internal courtyard, overall spatial structures of those cities are remarkably unique because of differences in housewater relationship. However, two cities have similarities in the way of using waterways not just as functional spaces but as places of various activities and multiple meanings.
