Abstract |
This is a study on the spatial structure of Indian cities and houses based on the Indiantraditional idealism. It is expected to provide better understanding on the spatial conceptunderlying the cities and houses, showing the intimate relationships between the Indianconceptual system and the physical environment. As a result of the examination of cities andhouse’s spatial structure using Indian conceptual systems, the common spatial structures oftwo cities were found as below, despite of morphological differences between the plannedcity of Jaipur and naturally developed city of Ahmedabad. Firstly, all spaces ranging from thedwelling and infill tissues to the city as a whole maintain centralized spatial formation, spaceaccumulation and axial-hierarchical organization, incorporating the concept of Mandala.Secondly, the city has cellular structures where the vicinities play the role of a single cell, arecombined to form the while city and each space is strongly closed. Thirdly, the locations anddirections of all spaces are carefully designed and oriented to meet the Vaastu principle, particularly avoiding the south orientation. |
