Title A Study on the Location and City-plan of the Capital City of Kaeseongand Hanseong Derived from that of Changanseong of Koguryo Dynasty

Abstract This article studies the process of the location and the transfer of the capital cities inKoguryo to consider the features in the alteration process of city-plan of the capital cities.How much the transference and variations of the capital cities of Koguryo influenced thelocation and planning of capital cities in Korea and Joseon dynasty is another main theme ofthis article. And whether or not Chinese culture had any influence on the location of capitalcity is studied through comparative research. This article examines the transfer process ofcapital city in Koguryo, the location and city-plan of Changanseong, the location and city-plan of Kaeseong in Korea and Hanseong in Joseon dynasty. To summarize the researchresults, (1) the basic concept of the location of the capital city is ‘mountain in the rear, river inthe front’ seen in the Anhakgung and Daesungsanseong, which means the configuration oflarge basin leaning against the mountain in the north and facing a river in the south; (2) Thecity-plan of the capital city had non-geometrical pattern due to the configuration of the land;(3) The street network was constructed with the major axis of east-west main road with south-north main roads extended later, and Hanseong had a narrow by-road of “Pima”; (4)Residential sites for the common people was developed along the east-west main road whichwere densely built-up area; (5) Fort was constructed or not constructed depended upon the configuration of the topography, and the two capitals were not suitably located for marinetrade; (6) Almost all the factors in ‘Jooryae’ of the ancient China was accepted in the layoutof the capital city except the location of market place which was influenced by the peculiarthought of worshiping mountain.
