Abstract This study aims to explore the neighborhood use reprogramming types and university’s rolethrough the analysis of planning leadership and the process of campus spatial expansion. Thetypes are regulated by the university’s role based on its founding philosophy as aneighborhood planner. Through the in-depth case study of Boston University and Fenway-Kenmore neighborhood, the types are as follows: (1) Leasing ▶Acquisition ▶Remodeling ▶Student dormitory, (2) Acquisition ▶Remodeling ▶Student dormitory ▶Accumulating the ownership ▶Redevelopment ▶High-rise dormitory, (3) Acquisition ▶Remodeling ▶Neighborhood residence, (4) Acquisition ▶Remodeling & Redevelopment ▶Infrastructures foruniversity town, (5) Partnership with private & public sector ▶Urban project for neighborhoodrevitalization, environmental upgrade and pedestrian-friendly street. University leadershipstrengthens the campus community and establishes physical and cultural environment ofuniversity town to be the anchor of the neighborhood. The university’s role is identified as aneighborhood planner with conventional institutional leadership, neighborhood leadershipand entrepreneur leadership in its nature. The case study suggests how the devastated urbanneighborhood can be regenerated through the university’s planning leadership in Seoul.
