Abstract |
The study attempts to understand the spatial structure of houses and settlements of India'splanned city, Jaipur. It is a unique city which combines the mechanical urban structure andthe organic living structure. Thus, it becomes a useful model to show the two different urbancharacteristics; the symbol of humanity and the system of accumulation of everyday life. Thestudy focuses on housing, which is the basic unit that forms the city. This paper tries toexplain Jaipur’s own characteristics through the collective ‘way of existence’ within the cityfrom the individual ‘meaning of existence’ of the housing. This is due to the characteristics ofan urban house based on the assumption that the way of existence influences the structures ofthe residential area and the entire city. From such background, the study has the followingpurposes. First, within the entire urban system of Jaipur, the spatial structure of thesettlements was understood. Second, the structural characteristics of the house in Jaipur werestudied with regards to its origins. Third, how the house exists and how it is collected in thesettlement were studied. |
