Abstract |
Private-owned pocket parks are important to improve the publicness of urban space. InKorea, various institutional systems promote private-owned pocket parks, but most private-owned pocket parks are criticized that they are not effectively used by the public. This studyexamined the relationship between the actual use and the design elements of private-ownedpocket parks to provide a logical basis to establish proper design guidelines and incentivesystem for the private-owned pocket parks. Twenty elements regarding accessibility, openness, convenience, esthetics, and maintenance are defined, and 23 private-owned pocketparks at Teheran Street in Seoul were surveyed. The data were analysed through Regressionand Correlation analysis. The results showed that the volume of user population(residentusers: building size, outside users: pedestrian volume and distance to subway) was animportant factor. In addition, visual openness and convenience(bench, slope, green area) werealso important for the outsiders, and accessibility(location) was important for the users frombuildings of immediate vicinity. Almost 70% of the total users were inside users, and thisdemonstrated that the public effect of the private-owned pocket parks was not satisfactory. Inorder to enhance the publicness of private-owned pocket parks, it is important to developdetailed urban design guidelines about the elements related to the use of outsiders such asvisual openness and convenience factors. |
