Abstract The pedestrian environment of small-medium cities are still in poor condition because localgovernments do not care much about it and are reluctant to improve it. This study reviews thepresent conditions of pedestrian environment and diagnoses each problems respectively insmall-medium city(Mokpo). The content of this study is comprised of three major parts : thetheoretical background, analyzing the problems through study cases and a survey. The result isas follows. First, the pedestrians mainly tend to walk for pleasure and exercise than for attendingoffice, attending school, or shopping etc. Second, it is analyzed that the pedestrian satisfaction ishigher in new town than in old town. Third, it was analyzed that the problems of pedestrianenvironment is in the lack of sidewalk, narrow effective walkway width, lack of bollard, highcurbs and resting place. These poor environments are difficult to use or even dangerous tonormal, healthy citizens not to mention the handicapped, elderly, and children. And the aspectsof pedestrian environment is different according to the characteristics of the area ; CBD,residential streets, school zones. Improvement of pedestrian environment need to be specific tocommercial and residential streets, and must secure safety in school zones with consideration topedestrian friendliness
