Abstract The purpose of this study is to see how urban spatial configuration in Suwon has beentransformed with time and to find out what factors have influenced the transformation process. The result of this paper can be summarized as follows : First, through the analysis of changesin the characteristics of spatial configuration due to growth and transition of Suwon, this studyclearly identifies the phenomenon of movement of the urban core to Suwon station in the1960’s and division and movement of the urban core to East-Suwon station in the 1980's and1990’s. Second, analysis shows that the phenomenon of decline of the old urban core with theSuwon castle as the central place. Third, intelligibility within entire spatial configuration in theold urban core of Suwon is maintained regardless of development of a city. Fourth, this studyshows that according to development of a city intelligibility and accessibility of main places ofthe old urban core decrease dramatically. Fifth, the result of comparing and analyzing othercities having spatial configuration similar to Suwon, however showed that a city which has asimilar growth background, growth course and result are different whether the castle isdisbanded or not. And because of preservation of the castle, the old urban core of Suwondeclined rapidly. Lastly, this study presents ways of spatial configuration regardingregenerating the old urban core through the analysis of changes of urban spatial configurationbased on the urban plan of Suwon. Suwon has to find spatial configurational changes aroundSuwon castle rather than to develop Suwon castle. Then it has to integrate city functions, preserve historical inheritance and enhance Suwon’s city identity.
